Let the apple finally detach from the stem and start falling. As part of this thought experiment, you might also want to imagine yourself falling along with it, right beside it.
Again, the general principle is that gravity has GRIPPED the apple in its force, and it will keep it from deviating from a certain type of motion, which in this case is: zero motion from left to right and front to back, in the horizontal directions (or horizontal "plane" ), and a constant increase in speed downwards of 32 feet per second gained every second. This means that after one second of falling, it is going 32 ft/sec, and after 2 seconds, it is moving 64 ft.sec.
This implies that if you try to stop it from the above-described motion, the apple will RESIST. You will have to exert a force, as with your hands and muscles, to make it change from that motion.
