So reach out with your hand and try to stop its motion. What you sense will be this resistance to change. If you stop it completely from moving, it will continue to resist not falling, and you call this the apple's WEIGHT, which is fine.
Now, let it go and fall right along beside it. To you, the apple is not moving now. Relative to you, the apple has zero motion and zero acceleration in all directions. What happens now when you try to give it some motion in a horizontal direction? Not up and down, which is the direction you are falling, but side to side.
It will RESIST a change in it's horizontal motion, just as I predicted from the gravitational principle.
