Part 1
Deacon Blues - Steely Dan
A Lyric Analysis
"This is the day of the expanding man."
This song is told in the first person, as a story. It begins when he proclaims one day that today, he will be turning into something bigger than what he has always been.
"That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand."
Everything that he has been, he has decided to abandon. This song announces his DECISION to become a new person.
"It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past."
And he announces what he wants to become, what he wants to "expand" into. He tells us about what kind of life style he has seen in the past as an outsider, and he he had decided to become one of those people. He wants to become a wild, drunken gambler. He has only looked enviously at their lifestyle before, but now that will change.

This adds the proof for the relativistic mass effects from motion, proving that gravity causes it.
